(Warning: contains puns)
It’s Halloween. You’re not dressing up and going out, but you want to get in to the spirit of the evening and to watch something to spook you. Here are seven suggestions from the selection on UK Netflix.
If you like home invasion films…
When the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learns that one of victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back. A clever, modern update on the classic home invasion film.
If you like all-out supernatural insanity…
DRAG ME TO HELL
A loan officer who evicts an old woman from her home finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse. Desperate, she turns to a seer to try and save her soul, while evil forces work to push her to a breaking point. Bonkers, all out horror by Sam Raimi.
If you like films off the beaten track…
Still a stranger to her own body, a high school student discovers she has a physical advantage when she becomes the object of male violence. Yes, it’s a film about a killer vagina.
If you like your horror bleak…
A freak storm unleashes a species of bloodthirsty creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole up in a supermarket and fight for their lives. Stephen King and Frank Darabont teamed up to make this very un-Shawshank horror showing the monsters aren’t all in the mist. It’s bloody great with one of my favourite endings of any film.
If you like to sleep with the light on…
THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT
Three film students vanish after traveling into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind. Yes, found footage horror has now been done to death, but this is the original and best, with an ending that genuinely sent chills up my spine.
If you like classic horror…
A young, abused and timid 17-year-old girl discovers she has telekinesis, and gets pushed to the limit on the night of her school’s prom by a humiliating prank. Brian De Palma’s classic, with a tour-de-force performance by Sissey Spacek.
If you like something more light-hearted…
TUCKER AND DALE VS EVIL
Tucker & Dale are on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are attacked by a group of preppy college kids. Daft, gory fun which pokes fun at a genre it clearly knows well.
BONUS TV SUGGESTION
I have to admit to watching all 6 episodes of season 1 in one afternoon as I was so engrossed (plus episodes are all sub-28 minutes long). Or just grossed out. Canadian anthology horror series Darknet is based around the seedy side of the internet, and plays with ideas of the darkest side of human nature. Some of the stories are a little hit and miss, but when they hit, they HIT.
